Project Description:
When it comes to fostering safe, open, and honest dialogue on issues of freedom, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a world-class example. Part of a new generation of cultural centers, this museum of conscience emphasizes experiential learning.
Guests can watch a short film narrated by Oprah, take a walk through a gallery of artifacts, media, and vignettes that trace 300 years of slavery in North America, and meet heroes who’ve taken a stand for freedom, including Harriet Tubman and Lech Walesa of Poland. The final gallery condenses 130 years of history into 10 minutes, featuring examples of “unfreedoms” extending to present day, such as modern slavery, hunger, tyranny and illiteracy. And, through a series of interactives, guests are challenged guests to consider, “Where do I stand?” “How can I help?” and “What would I do?” in a variety of situations.
